Deferring Graduate Admission

As of Fall 2022, the English Department no longer allows admitted Ph.D. students to defer admission.

Ph.D. cohorts are carefully balanced to represent a range of literary genres, historical periods, and theoretical frameworks. This balance is vital to the richness of our department's scholarly community, community-building between cohorts, and the program's intellectual diversity. Our decision to no longer allow deferrals is an extension of our commitment to this balance.

M.A. students may defer admission for up to 1 year.

Students who wish to defer should notify the Grad Chair and the AD of Graduate Studies as soon as possible.
