Admissions Criteria Statement

The English Department at the University of Pennsylvania evaluates candidates for admission based on a wide range of criteria. We do not accept GRE scores, nor do we exclude applications based on the failure to meet particular benchmarks (such as a minimum GPA). Instead, we evaluate candidates holistically, considering several factors to judge potential for intellectual achievement and academic success.

Admissions to the program are conducted by an admissions committee consisting of faculty across different fields. Students assemble committees by taking classes from various faculty members in their first two years. All current standing faculty are willing to advise students in the program. For this reason, it is not necessary to identify or contact a dissertation supervisor when applying.
