Native American Literature

From oral traditions to Youtube videos of Native American hip hop, this coursesurveys the diverse body of Native American literature through its manytransformations across the centuries.  The course will focus primarily oncontemporary Native American literature, an era known as the Native AmericanRenaissance.  We will read literary works by Black Elk, Leslie Marmon Silko,Sherman Alexie, N.  Scott Momaday, and others.  The course will also includefilms such as Smoke Signals and Whale Rider.
