Ralph A. Klinefelter, retired development officer and director of public relations for Duquesne University and the first lay president of La Roche College, died Thursday at his home in Swissvale.

A native Pittsburgher, Mr. Klinefelter, 64, lived at 7328 Schley Ave.

A graduate of LaSalle College, he obtained his master's degree and doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.

During his career, he was a classroom teacher for more than 30 years at Duquesne, La Roche and at Seton Hill College, Greensburg, and wrote a weekly column for several Catholic newspapers.

The author of several books for Catholic reading, Mr. Klinefelter received the Biship Wright award for work in education in 1964, and in 1969 was named to the Central Catholic High School hall of fame.

He was a member of the Serra Club, Knights of St. George, and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Cassidy Klinefelter; a son, Thomas V.; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Cypra; his mother, Mrs. Theresa Klinefelter; four sisters, Mrs. Eileen Wentzel, Mrs. Mary Robinson, Mrs. Jean Gormley and Mrs. Clare Watson; and three grandchildren.

Friends are being received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thomas L. Nied Funeral Home, 7441 Washington St. Swissvale.

A mass of Christian burial will be offered tomorrow at 11 a.m. in St. Anselm Church on McClure Avenue, Swissvale, with burial in Braddock Catholic Cemetary.

The family suggests contributions to St. Anselm Church.
