David L. Lopez

 

David L. Lopez, MD, comes to us from Columbia University, where he has been a dedicated psychoanalyst faculty member for nearly 20 years. During this time, he has taught courses on adolescent development, diversity, and Freud’s theories. He has actively participated in several committees, most recently contributing to diversity initiatives at different levels. Having grown up in Mexico City, Dr. Lopez is Hispanic and has Indigenous American roots. Additionally, David Lopez is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has served on the voluntary faculty of the joint Cornell and Columbia Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program, where he has taught and supervised long-term psychotherapy.

 

With over two decades in private practice in Greenwich, CT, David Lopez has also held the position of President of the American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis (AAPDPP), where he is currently recognized as a Fellow. He is also a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP).

 

David Lopez serves on the editorial boards of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP). He has been a reviewer for the Medical Letter for more than a decade and is a member of the LGBTQ+ Committee for the GAP. He has written extensively and presented nationally and internationally on the understanding and psychotherapy of gender nonconforming adolescents. David Lopez is now embarking on a new journey, relocating to Philadelphia with his wife, Alex Wortman, where they both plan to teach at the University of Pennsylvania and the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.
