Chris Chan will defend his dissertation, “Communal Lyricisms and the Lyricization of English Poetry, 1650–1790,” on Friday, April 24. Chris’s thesis reinvigorates the study of historical poetics by demonstrating how poets in this period were fully engaged with the turbulent events of their times, and by showing that the form of the lyric, far from being evidence of a turning away from public issues, allowed its practitioners to find new and innovative ways of commenting on their world.
