Insurgent Remains: Afterlives of the American Revolution, 1770-1820

This project examines accounts of the American Revolutionary war circulating in the decades after its official conclusion that destabilize its narrativization as a war of national origins. Reading materials from across the Anglophone Atlantic world that reflect on the war as an occasion of loss, I argue for a reconsideration of literary and visual forms -- allegories, anthologies, tragedies, and petitions -- as sites of insurgent potential that broaden our available vocabularies for describing revolutionary experiences of time, politics, and subjectivity.
