This course will examine queer embodiment, subjectivity, characterization, and acts in premodern drama. Starting with classical examples, the class will mainly focus on early modern English drama in its historical and political context. While our primary focus will be on sexuality and gender, we will explore the ways sexuality intersects with religion, race, and class in dramatic literature. Two short essays and a final paper.
