Introduction to the History of the Book: Cultures of the Book

This course is about the printing and making of manuscripts and books. We will focus on the makers (paper-makers, writers [scribes and authors], type designers, printers, illustrators, binders) and on the material processes that transform rags and ink into printed texts. How do the material forms of books shape their meaning? The course will be based upon hands-on experience in printing and book-making.
