Creative Non-Fiction Writing

ENGL 135.301
instructor(s):
T 1:30-4:30

English 135 this fall will take in both the personal essay and the profile. You'll be reading and learning from familiar names like Ernest Hemingway, Joyce Carol Oates, Tom Wolfe and Norman Mailer. But you will also great stuff from otherwise unfamiliar names like Al Stump, Red Smith and Stan Hochman -- all sportswriters, but among the best essayists of the late 20th Century. The professor will also force, or at least cajole, you to read and criticize some of his writing. You will write and be workshopped by the other class participants. This may well be painful, but that's the point. As one famous essayist once wrote, "Writing is easy, all I do is open up a vein and bleed." Bring as many open veins to class as possible.
