Through intensive writing, critiquing, collaborating, revising, students will discover the real story percolating just below the first draft of a work-in-progress. We will explore character development/motivation, voice, sense of place, operant themes, and story lines as they present themselves in the students' works. Emphasis will be placed on forward movement of the work and students will be required to make the leap from first draft of a story or novel portions to a textured, publishable piece. Pre-requisites: Sample of imaginative narrative AND either an A in English 112 or a letter of recommendation from an instructor. (Enrollment limited to 15.) Students interested in the course should submit samples to D. McKinney-Whetstone, by placing them in her mailbox in the English Department office. Please include social security number, class status, E-mail, and daytime phone number.
