This course will introduce you to a broad range of fiction, poetry, and autobiography, mostly from 1800 to 1900. During this period, authors including Lydia Maria Child, Margaret Fuller, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Louisa May Alcott, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Harriet Jacobs, Emily Dickinson, Rebecca Harding Davis, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Kate Chopin worked dramatic transformations on women's literary and social roles, and on the theory and practice of gender relations in the United States. Important topics will include: gender and genre, tradition and patriarchalism, reproduction, professional authorship and women's labor, sentimentalism, slavery and women's rights, domesticity, sexuality, and regionalism.
