This workshop is designed for those students who have taken the introductory workshop (English 113) and desire advanced study. It is especially valuable for creative writing concentrators in poetry within the English major, for those who are working on longer works, or for those who wish to work on a series of poems connected in style and subject matter. The hope is that by semester's end, through revision, the student will have a portfolio of poems which are for the most part consistent in voice, form, and/or thematic concern. Students must submit work for acceptance into the course. Discussion and constructive critique of student work will be the primary focus of the course; student participation is therefore essential. There will be required texts: an anthology of essays on poetics as well as individual collections by contemporary poets. Students will also be asked to submit written critiques of each other's poems, as well as present an oral and a written report on one of the required collections of poems.
