In this course students will be asked to read and critique ten works of fiction and non-fiction by African American women, an Anglo American woman, Asian Amercan women, Australian women, and a French woman. All works were first published within the past three decades and include novels, memoirs, and narratives that seek to combine the genres of novel with those of diary and memoir. Authors comprise Marguerite Duras, Helen Garner, bell hooks, Alice Kaplan, Maxine Hong Kingston, Joan Lindsay, Toni Morrison, Carol Shields, Amy Tan, and Alice Walker. Requirements: class attendance and participation; three short papers (3 pages); and by class vote, either a final exam or a final paper.
