This lecture/discussion course will examine the diverse ways in which contemporary American Women Writers of Color address issues of history, community, displacement, creativity and identity. Writers include Louise Erdrich, Toni Morrison, Bharati Mukherjee, Sandra Cisneros, Dorothy Allison and Joy Kogawa among others. Students will write one short paper, several unannounced quizzes, and a take home final. Throughout the semester, there will be several screenings of independent films and videos. These screenings are an important part of the course.
