Contemporary American Literature by Women of Color: The Intersection Between Race and Gender

This course will cover a broad range of literature from various genre, including fiction, drama, poetry, and non-fiction prose, that represent the ways in which race and ethnicity play a role in gender formation. As such, we will look at the ways in which owmen of color have extended the parameters of feminist literary criticism to address racial difference. We will also examine the kinds of textual strategies these writers employ to represent the contingency of race and gender. Among the authors we will read: Toni Morrison; Sandra Cisneros; Aurora Levins; Leslie Marmon Silko; and  Maxine Hong Kingston.
