ENGL 576.301
instructor(s):
M 12-3

Readings in the major sources of English literary theory and criticism, from the 18th to the 20th century, along with key illustrative poems.  Our main objective will be to identify the main problems of creativity in the past two centuries, and  the formation of a characteristically "modern" view of literature and a "literary" culture.  Recurring topics include:  the traditions of meditative and first-person poetry; the parallel themes of the "death of poetry" and the development of novel theory; literature and gender theory; the linkages of Romantic and Modern, and of Victorian and Modern.
