Romantics and Modernists

ENGL 095.800
MWF 12

An intense survey of the major British poets from Pope to Shelley.  The course aims at providing students with a sufficiently informed understanding of the literary and social history of 18th-century England to assess the “revolutionary” claims and gestures of British Romanticism.  The first half of the course will be devoted to works of the 18th century, with particular emphasis on the later Augustan poetry of Pope and Johnson and on the “Poets of Sensibility.”  The second half will emphasis on Blake, Wordsworth, and Shelly.  A few works of prose fiction and literary criticism may also be assigned.  There will be midterm and final exams, at least one short paper, and a longer paper of 8-10 pages.
