Toni Morrison and Charles Johnson have both received accolades from literary critics and readers alike. But in looking at their work we find two radically different sensibilities informing their work: Morrison is often engaged in the process of revising/challenging/reconfiguring her relationship to Modernist practice, while the influence of Eastern and Existential philosophy has been a strong factor in Johnson's fiction. In this graduate seminar, we will read both the fictions and literary criticism of both these writers whose work is so important to how we wil think about African American literature in the next milennium.
