18th Century Literature and Culture I

This course will be a study in cultural as well as bibliographical terms, of eighteenth-century English book production, including the following topics:  authors and their audience, literary, the “knowledge explosion” of the century, paper, patronage, provincial reading, publishing and its evolution.  We will study certain works in greater detail because of their unusual history, including books by Dryden, Swift, Pope, Johnson, and Burke.  The course will include trips to local collections and book establishments and a day at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.
