On the political meanings of Hume's language in "Of the Protestant Succession" (1752).  The essay examines a particularly resonant phrase -- "the abdicated family" -- in light of the difficulty faced by those attempting to represent Stuart history between 1689 and the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.
