Writing Humor and Comedy

ENGL 132.900
instructor(s):
Tuesday 4:30-8:30 pm

This course is a writing workshop devoted to helping students develop their skill in humor and comedy writing. Students will be striving to write humor and comedy of publishable quality and will be becoming stronger critical readers and editors of humor. The main course content is the creative work of the students and published humor writing by many authors (such as David Sedaris, Sloane Crosley, Steve Martin, Dorothy Parker). The focus is on prose humor and comedy that is primarily intended to be read, rather than performed (this includes pieces that could be performed, such as comedy sketches and short plays; however, jokes intended for stand-up comedy routines are generally not appropriate).
