"Make It New" is the famous motto of modernism. But when it came to women, major modernists like T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound kept to rather old-fashioned ideas. We will read women modernists poets (Gertrude Stein, Mina Loy, Marianne Moore) as well as contemporary women (Juliana Spahr, Harryette Mullen, M. NourbeSe Philip, Lisa Robertson) who have shown and continue to show the challenges and benefits of thinking in new ways about both poetry and gender.

Assignments: one oral presentation and two papers (7-10 pp.)

key words: modernism, poetry, women, gender
