Sector 4: Literature of the long 18th-century (ca. 1640-1832) of the Standard Major
Careful consideration of works produced by and about British women between 1660 and 1800. We shall reading in many genres, including what we now call prose fiction, memoirs, letters, drama, poetry, propaganda, and journalism. Emphasis will be on eighteenth-century imaginative writing’s participation in contemporaneous political, social, and aesthetic developments.
Requirements: careful reading of primary texts, library research, oral reports, class participation, and papers. Students in disciplines other than English are welcome. All students are expected to have training in deliberative writing.
