Documentary Drama (The Edinburgh Project)

This course explores playwrights, performers and theatre companies that create “verbatim” drama—theatre pieces based on a documents, interviews, and texts in the public record—such as the Living Newspapers of the Federal Theatre Project, Bertolt Brecht, Heiner Kipphardt, David Hare, Anna Deavere Smith, and Tectonic Theatre. In addition to studying scripts and performances, the members of the course will collective compile and arrange documentary material into a theatre piece, which will be performed this summer at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival by students in the class participating in the the Theatre Arts Program’s “Edinburgh Project.”
