London in Fiction and Film

ENGL 061.950
instructor(s):

What makes London such a vibrant city is its ethnic diversity and rich history.  In this course we will study films, novels, and stories that feature London as a cosmopolitan space.  Reading about the city's diverse neighborhoods—North, South, East and West—will also introduce you to different parts of town that offer much in the way of culture, food, shops, architecture, and history you can explore firsthand.  Films will include Tom Jones, A Clockwork Orange, Blow-Up,and The
Buddha of Suburbia. Writers may include Anthony Burgess, Hanif Kureishi, Salman Rushdie, and Zadie Smith. The course may be taken as a seminar with the addition of a research paper.  The course satisfies either Sector 2 or Sector 6 of the major and may be double counted if taken as a seminar.
