This course will survey some of the major American authors of the 19th century, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Kate Chopin, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Stephen Crane.  Through their tales, short stories, and novellas, these writers explore America's Puritan history, its industrial and commercial present, and the gender challenges and class struggles related to its future.
