19th-Century Poetry

This survey course will focus on British and American poetry from the nineteenth century. We will pay particular attention to poetic form and representations of nature, the imagination, perception, and the body. Authors may include Blake, Charlotte Smith, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Felicia Hemans, Keats, Emerson, Whitman, Dickinson, Barrett Browning, Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, Christina Rossetti, and Hopkins. Coursework will include reading responses, a mid-term essay, a final paper, and a final exam.
