An intensive study of nine of Shakespeare's plays: Richard II, 1 Henry IV, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello and The Tempest-and the screen play for Shakespeare in Love (as well as the movie itself). The course will also consider as background other plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries and related works. Topics covered will include Elizabethan language and culture, printing and stage history and the relationship of Shakespeare to the modern world.
