This introduction to literary theory in the XXth century will be guided by the role of Saussure's linguistic revolution in the formation of structual and semiological methods of analysis. It will then consider the poststructuralist critiques of Barthes, Lacan, Kristeva, Foucault and Derrida. The closing section includes the feminist perspectives of Cixous and Irigary on writing as well as the relevance of the foregrounding of language to postcolonial theory and practice. Requirements: 5 short papers of approximately 5 pages each; one oral presentation.
