Major British Novel 1660-1914

ENGL 060.002
instructor(s):
MWF 2

Our readings will range from the 1690s to the 1900s, from Aphra Behn to A.S. Byatt. Class discussions and assignments will center around the issue of reader-writer relationships: what sort of expectations do or did novelists have for their readers' experiences of their work? Are these expectations historically specific, or can we generalize about them? Ought we to? Novels will include but are not limited to works by Behn, Fielding, Defoe, Burney, Austen, Scott, Eliot, Woolf, Joyce, Byatt. Weekly writing assignments, one short paper, and a final group presentation, plus class participation and attendance, will make up the bulk of the grade.
