This course is designed to open up a number of perspectives for students who might be interested in pursuing the serious study of literature. We will focus on the Modernist era in Europe and America, with smaller glances back to Edwardian England and forward to our own time, the so-called Postmodern. We will read a number of primary texts by authors such as Joyce, Eliot, Toomer, Stein, Williams, and Loy, and critical and theoretical works as well. While we investigate the issues of defining Modernism as literary period, we will also be exploring issues of sexual norms, racial assumptions, changes in visual and temporal perception.
