The British Novel A broad survey course which follows the development of the British novel from the coming together of many popular forms in the late 17th century to the modernist novel. The course will look at the way social concerns about gender, domesticity, urban and rural space, money and class shape the novel and treats individual texts as a series of experiments with the changing idea of realism. On the course we will look at such novels as: Behn, Oroonoko, Defoe, Moll Flanders, Edgeworth, Castle Rackrent, Austen, Mansfield Park, Bronte, Wuthering Heights, Dickens, Great Expectations, Eliot, Middlemarch, Woolf, To the Lighthouse.
