Advanced Poetry Writing

ENGL 118.301
instructor(s):
R 1:30-4:30

This is a working group for advanced poets. Because enrollment in the class is limited, students seeking admission should submit a sample of work to Professor Stewart in her mailbox in the English Department. Be sure to attach an e-mail address or telephone number so that she can reply.

During our sessions we will be discussing major poems and classic statements on poetics with the aim of strengthening our own intentions and practices as poets. Class readings will include works from the Norton Anthology and statements on poetics by Sidney, Wordsworth, Barfield, Wimsatt, Grossman, and Bernstein. The goals of the course are to produce a body of work which uses the reading in a serious and sustaining way in order to explore poetic process and to create a poetics of one's own out of a deeper understanding of the history of poetic intention.
