Creative Non-Fiction Writing

ENGL 135.303
instructor(s):
TR 3-4:30

Non-fiction writing covers an array of genres from op-ed articles to the personal essay. In this course we will read and write in a variety of these genres, paying special attention to the features that distinguish good writing and attract readers to a writer's ideas. We will attempt to describe aspects of the creative process, viewing all writing as the creative expression of some aspect of the self. Weekly readings will include model articles and essays by established writers as well as selections about the subject of writing. We will focus on meeting the needs of readers and achieving the writer's intention by exploring a variety of techniques including narrative, voice, structure and style.

Students will write and revise weekly essays and become accustomed to the rhythms of the writing process. In frequent workshop sessions, we will read and respond to each other's work.
