This course will look at a selection of modern Western political drama in order to think about the ways in which the theatre can be used to talk about politics and to try to effect political change. We'll look both at plays that contest governmental politics (anti-Communist and anti-Fascist plays, for instance) as well as plays that focus on personal politics (e.g., plays that question racial and gender ideologies). Possible authors include Ibsen, Chekhov, Brecht, Havel, Baraka, Churchill, Soyinka and Ionesco.
