This course introduces students to Anglo-Saxon literature and culture through the direct study of the Old English language. We begin by learning the basic paradigms, vocabulary, and syntax of Old English; exercises in translation come from a variety of Old English texts: e.g., prose treatises, riddles, elegies like "The Wanderer," and selections from *Beowulf*. At the same time, we also examine our exemplar texts' literary qualities, paying particular attention to the social and historical context in which they were produced; I'll ask students to select an aspect of Old English culture, research it over the course of the semester, and report on it. Additional assignments include a translation midterm and a final term paper analyzing an Old English text.
