In this course, we will read, discuss and analyze the informal essay. Although we will use essays from "The Art of the Personal Essay" as examples of excellence in the genre, much of our time, as the semester progresses, will be spent on your own writing. You will be required to write four essays--two of which will go through the workshop process--on topics from the broad range that the informal (personal) essay allows. Examples of those topics are: memoir, travel, cultural phenomena, profiles, and nature. You should expects your essays to go through a number of drafts, and you should also be prepared to act as editor for two of the workshopped essays.
