In this course we shall study American poets from the nineteenth century to the present. We shall examine American poets individually, in relation to each other, and in relation to their sociocultural milieu, attempting to isolate the formal patterns, central issues, themes, and differences that make up the American tradition in verse. Readings for the course will include selections from the work of Edgar Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, William Carlos Williams, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Lowell, Gwendolyn Brooks, Elizabeth Bishop, and Adrienne Rich, John Ashbery, and L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poetry. There will be a paper, a midterm, and a final examination.
