Department of English

This seminar will be devoted to a series of artists who paint in the wake of photography. We will start with two nineteenth century painters--Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas—and then shift to the period between 1950 and the present. One or two weeks will be reserved for each of the following painters: Andy Warhol, Richard Artschwager, Vija Celmins, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Wilhelm Sasnal, and Luc Tuymans.
