18th Century British Literature: Richardson

ENGL 748.301
instructor(s):

Careful examination of the work of Britain’s most influential eighteenth-century novelist. Our primary focus will be on Richardson's three novels, /Pamela /(parts one and two), /Clarissa/, and /Sir Charles Grandison/. In addition, we'll examine supplementary primary materials -- other published works, letters, abridgements, and self-abridgements -- for evidence of Richardson's at once collaborative and combative relationships with readers. We shall consider the significant revisions Richardson made to his novels over the years, and sample the secondary criticism that has emerged around his work.

Undergraduates are not permitted to take 700-level courses.
