Teaching of Literature

ENGL 800.301
instructor(s):
w 3-6

This course is designed for first-time teachers in Penn's writing program, and aims to help them find pedagogical strategies for practical use in the classroom. The emphasis will be on teaching, and much of our time will be devoted to practical concerns. Secondarily, we will be consider more theoretical issues raised in the books and films our freshman writing students are working on, particularly as these relate to the problem of sympathetic identification with fictional lives (see freshman course description). Students will develop and share weekly writing assignments, grade papers, discuss pedagogical issues (grading, classroom politics and practices) meet regularly with advanced student mentors, and consider, through individual reports on a series of short, common readings, issues of pedagogy and literary theory.
