This course will deal with the contribution of American literature -- particularly the novel -- to new ways of imagining the social order at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. We will be primarily concerned with ways of understanding, organizing and representing the "people." Authors to be discussed will include Horatio Alger, Charles Chesnutt, Harold Frederick, Ellen Glasgow, William Dean Howells, Helen Hunt Jackson, Henry James and Jack London.
