JOB PLACEMENT INFORMATION

The Penn English Department runs a comprehensive Job Placement Service and is committed to providing all of our graduate students with the advice, mentoring, and support they need in order to prepare themselves for a successful job search. The Department's Placement Officer, currently Chi-ming Yang, assists job searchers in preparing CVs, application letters, dissertation abstracts, and teaching portfolios; helps students to prepare for interviews and coordinates the dress-rehearsal mock interviews in which numerous faculty members participate; offers advice on campus visits and the selection and presentation of a job talk; coordinates practice job talks and practice teaching demonstrations; assists job searchers in negotiating the terms of a job offer. The Placement Officer is also available to answer questions about the job market from graduate students at earlier stages of the program.

From 2003 through 2013, the department has placed 75% of its Ph.D.s in tenure-track positions;  our current three-year placement rate is 91%.  For a full list of the first-time tenure-track jobs of our graduates, along with their current positions (if different), please consult our Job Placement Record.

All Ph.D. students and faculty in English have access to the online version of the MLA Job Information List via the ADE Homepage . Login ID and Password will be distributed to job-seekers by the Placement Officer by mid-September; don't give these out to non-Penn people. Job searchers should consult the online MLA Job Information List, as well as the print version (available in the grad office by early October), and other resources that post job listings, including the Chronicle of Higher Education and field-specific websites and listservs.
