Departmental Language Exams

All PhD students are required to pass 2 language exams to graduate. Exams are offered twice per year. We strongly recommend that students complete 1 of their language exams in the first year. As of the incoming class of 2022, we require students to pass both of their language exams by the end of their 3rd year.

All MA students are required to pass 1 language exam to graduate.

The exam consists of translating 2 passages from a non-English language of your choice into English. You will have 2 hours to return your translation. The test is administered virtually and there are no restrictions on where you can take it. You may use a dictionary, including online dictionaries. More information can be found here.
