Worlds of English Poetry, 1660-1912

This course is an introduction to major poems and poets in the English tradition from the Restoration through early Modernism.  We will explore the formal and thematic features of individual poems and poetic genres, learning key terms and methods of literary-critical analysis.  And we will trace the broad history of poetic practice in the lives and times of a diverse range of poets in England, Ireland, Scotland, and North America.
