Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad is one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. Although he learnt English only as an adult, he has been widely studied as one of the most controversial and fascinating figures of the English literary canon. In recent years, there have also been attempts to read Conrad in relation to European history and Europe's relation to Asia during the colonial period. This course is an introduction to Conrad's early fiction. We will study Conrad's writings, especially those that focus on the relation between modern Europe and Asia. These novels and short stories represent some of Conrad's most exciting and provocative work. We will study texts like Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Tales of Unrest, and many other works that reveal the complexity and depth of Conrad's fiction.
