Reading Film

This course will instruct students in the basics of how to read a film, including film form, film language, genre and theory. Each week we will examine one genre, one theory and one aspect of film language. We will also discuss other tools to interpret films. Among the genres we will explore are the thriller, comedy and the documentary. Films will include "Raging Bull," "The Graduate", "Battle of Algiers" and "Dr. Strangelove." Full features will be screened weekly at obligatory evening screenings. Readings will be taken from a text on film language, forms, critical approaches, genres and theory as well as from class hand outs.
