Creative Non-Fiction Writing

ENGL 135.301
instructor(s):
T 1:30-4:30

This is a course in creative nonfiction prose-prose largely in the subjective, rather than the objective form (except in the case of "literary journalism") and which renders experience in a manner akin to that of literature.

We will read a number of forms from the text (The Art of Truth) and you will write three (3) of your own of no less than 1000 words. Ideally, two of your pieces will go through the workshop process. Your major pieces should fall under the following categories: memoir, personal essay, literary journalism, nature writing, travel, science writing, cultural criticism.

You will also write five (5) minor assignments of open length. You are encouraged to use these shorter pieces as parts or drafts of your longer, major essays.
