19th Century British Novel

This course provides an introduction to the 19th Century Novel. We will be reading a selection of major fictional works of the period, paying close attention to their differing themes and styles, as well as discussing the various ways in which they participated in recurrent Victorian debates about the Woman Question, sexuality, the working class, etc. Novels we will read may include Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, Charles Dickens's Bleak House, Wilkie Collins's A Woman in White, George Eliot's Adam Bede, Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters, and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

Requirements for the course will likely include one paper, a midterm exam, a final exam, weekly course listserve posts, and lively class participation.
